There are several things in this life that can really get your goat and that really ruin your day. They say that there's nothing worse than finding a worm in your apple, but the reality is that there are many other things far more frustrating that occur all of the time. For instance twisting your ankle on a curb – it happens a lot and the shock and the pain is enough to ruin anyone's day. Likewise stubbing your toe – again a painful annoyance that will put a blight on the sunniest of afternoons. Getting rained on on the way home come to think of it – that's pretty annoying too as it means you have to change your clothes and end up freezing cold on the walk.

But more annoying than any of these little pests is when you get a speeding ticket through the post. This can really ruin your day as it means that you have points on your license and are one step closer to having it revoked, and because it means you need to pay a hefty fine and this can be enough to leave you financially in a much weaker position. This is a serious annoyance as you will end up not being able to splash out on things in the same way and maybe having to stay in that night instead of going out with friends. If your speeding ticket actually does result in your losing your license then this is a very serious problem that is far more than just 'annoying' and that can actually make your whole life much more difficult – no longer will you be able to take your kids to school if you normally do, no longer will you be able to drive to work, and visits to friends and family are a thing of the past.

The really annoying thing about it all too is that a lot of the time speeding tickets are unfair. In fact most of us would agree that we would support any political party that agreed to improve the system considerably. Of course there needs to be a speeding limit, but do the penalties have to be so harsh? Couldn't the fines be means tested? Apart from anything else it would be simple for speeding cameras to only go off one in every ten times – it would mean that 1/10th of the people were 'punished' but it would mean that they still slowed down through the cameras. Most of us too would agree that the speed limits are too slow in a lot of places and if you needed proof you could simply observe the fact that everyone does speed at some point. 90% of people certainly on the motorway, and through straight roads in the evening most people will do it too. That's why it can seem so frustrating when someone is hiding around that corner with a speed gun to 'catch you out' and fine you.

The reality is that these speeding tickets exist as they do because the government needs more money to maintain roads etc and this is all very good and well. But wouldn't we all rather that the government was just honest and put up road tax? This is why you rarely get a speed camera uphill, and why a lot of the time they are in places where you are expected to be speeding up. In some cases you might be caught out for a speeding ticket that wasn't entirely your fault and fortunately there are legal ways you can get around this problem in many cases.
